2000 Decembers Ago

I love Christmas. It is full of memories and excitement. The lights, the decorations, the music, family time, all of it adds to the Christmas season. I am excited when Christmas music starts playing on the radio. I especially love all of the Christmas songs proclaiming the birth of Jesus. Just thinking about that night, the night Jesus was born, songs such as Silent Night, O Holy Night, Away in a Manger, and many more. A favorite song of mine about the birth of Jesus is "2000 Decembers Ago."  Below is not the song in its entirety, but the lyrics that are my favorite.

Were the sheep as amazed as the shepherds
At the new star that lit up the sky?
Did the willow trees whisper excitement
To the rivers and streams passing by?

Did the joy ricochet off the mountains
'Til it filled up the valleys below?
Did all the world sense love abounding
2000 Decembers ago?

Was anyone able to look at the stable
And not see a child but a King
I wish, I could hear back over the years
As heaven and nature sing, heaven and nature sing

Did the walls of the barn start to tremble
With a glory they could not contain?
Did anyone wake with the feeling
Of peace that they could not explain?

Oh, the love must have been overwhelming
As it warmed everyone in its flow
For all of the earth is still telling
Of 2000 Decembers ago

Wow! Just think about those lines for a minute. The Bible tells us that even nature is aware and even rocks will cry out and worship the Lord. I can guarantee you that the sheep saw the star and the angels. Did the joy ricochet off the mountains, til it filled up the valley's below? The joy of salvation yet to come!
Did the walls of the barn start to tremble, with a glory they could not contain? Did anyone wake with a feeling, of peace that they could not explain?  That little stable was sheltering the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the King of Kings! I love this thought that even the wood and beams were bursting at the seams at the birth of our Lord Jesus!

But we cannot stop there. If all we think about when we listen to Christmas songs is  the birth of Jesus, then we are missing the point. This was a pivotal moment in history. The manger leads only to one place. The Cross. At the moment of Jesus birth, the goal was for him to grow up, become a man, minister to the people around him, and ultimately die a horrific, sacrificial death on the cross, for you and for me. Without Christmas, without the birth of Jesus, we would not have salvation. Christmas points to Easter. Christmas is the precursor to the greatest event that the earth has ever seen, the death and resurrection of Jesus. The joy you feel when you think about that should overwhelm you.
So as we celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas season, let us also thank him for taking on the form of man, for the sole purpose of giving us salvation.
